Gary Young wanted cash when he targeted a 40-year-old BT consultant walking the regular commuter route from the Metro Arena car park to her office on Newcastle Quayside. He grabbed her from behind, putting a strangle hold around her neck and forced her to the ground. The woman felt a kick to her shoulder as she curled on the floor to protect herself. But Young, 17, picked up a fence plank and hit her over the head with it three times. And although the victim had pushed away her handbag hoping the teenager would take it, he was still hitting her relentlessly when a passing motorist saw the onslaught, sounded her horn and finally forced him to flee empty-handed. The victim, not being named by police, was left bleeding from a gaping head wound which had to be stapled. She later told police the attack was so savage she thought she would not survive. Her shocked rescuer told police she had also feared for the woman's life. Fake Gucci Wallet Handbags And investigations revealed Young already had a disturbing history of aggression towards women as he grew up in a string of care homes where staff struggled to control him. Chanel Charm Bracelet "The defence suggest a motive of robbery but it is clear that violence itself was very much at the forefront of his mind," said Mr Tim Parkin, prosecuting at Newcastle Crown Court. "He has already amassed a number of convictions for violence. He has a hostility towards women in particular and that is shown by his behaviour in the place he was living when this attack took place. "A pattern of his behaviour has always been to lose his temper with female members of staff and often to spit and throw food at them." The teenager fled the attack scene, hiding in bushes to dodge a search helicopter, but was linked to the assault by his DNA. Young, of Elmwood Grove, Whitley Bay, admitted attempted robbery last September. His previous convictions include common assault, assault by beating and false imprisonment. Nick Cartmel, defending, said the teenager had been abandoned as a baby, passed through 20 different homes and hated himself for staging the attack in his desperation to get crack cash. But Judge David Hodson said an indefinite sentence of detention had to be passed to protect the public. He told Young: "Goodness knows what might have happened if that motorist had not come on the scene. Its clear to this court you pose a significant risk of serious harm." Young will be eligible for release on licence after he has served a minimum of 2 1/2 years but will only be freed when the parole board is satisfied it is safe to do so. The victim told police of her relief at the sentence.
