Defending World Champion Richard Perini with Evolution and Lang Walker with Kokomo each won three races in an eight race series in which nine yachts competed. After leading the fleet by one point after the first day of racing, Walker's crew aboard Kokomo managed to hold off challengers in the lighter breezes of the second day to win the regatta. Perini's Evolution maintained their overnight second position and Ray Robert's crew Quantum Racing, completed the podium places. "Competition at this year's world championship will be fierce and we will have to sail consistently well to try and defend our title," said Perini. Courses in the two-day event were set in the Sound area of Sydney Harbour. On the first day, the fleet sailed five races in a developing south-westerly that swung to the west. The following day the breeze dropped off resulting in only three races being sailed. Both Evolution and Kokomo won three races each over the two days. Michael Milne's Blacksnake took the gun in race seven and Ray Roberts' Quantum Racing won the final race. As Offshore Yachting went to press, Perini and Walker and crew members were in the US where they and CYCA Vice Commodore Matt Allen with his Ichi Ban crew were preparing to compete in the North American Championship. Allen has sailed in a number of events in the US this northern summer. He took second place at the East Coast Farr 40 Championship in May in Annapolis and more recently won Fake Maurice Lacroix Watches the 15-boat Farr 40 class at the Rolex sponsored New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta, raced on the waters where the championship will be sailed in September. Meanwhile, leading US contenders look well prepared. Former World Champion Jim Richardson and his Barking Mad crew recently won the US East Coast Circuit with a win at Newport in the last event which was hosted by the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. Jeff Seigal's Appreciation was second in the series and Alexis Michas' Phish Food third. Nine boats sailed in the required four events of the six-event series. Strong competition is also expected from Europe where a close nine-boat championship was recently completed in Menorca. Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino, Marco Rodolfi's TWT, and Gianluigi Serena's Enfant Terrible took the top three places with Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi crew fourth.
